This young Malayali girl from Kottayam has indeed come full circle. An IT engineer by training (she is a B Tech in computer Science), she briefly worked for Hewlett Packard, before she was crowned Navy Queen in 2007. That would change her life as she knew it. Soon after, modeling companies came a-calling and then there was no looking back. Today, Serin in one of Bangalore’s most sought after photographers, covering everything from fashion to magazine photo spreads and television commercials.
MALAYALI recently caught up with the stunning photographer and she was glad to address our readers and share her news with us.
Family and childhood
We are a family of four. Mom, dad, my brother and myself. I did my schooling in Vizag, and college in kottayam.
Winning Navy Queen 2007 and its aftermath..
Winning the Navy Queen was an amazing experience, and also a wonderful entry into the modeling world. I’ve done quite a few print and television commercials, walked for some good designers and brands and later moved on to other side of the camera. So far, its been good- I’ve shot for some good brands, quite a few celebrities and done some fashion photo shoots as well.
From IT engineer at HP to freelance photographer- what gave you the confidence to take that leap of faith?
Frankly, I was very excited on my first day at HP. I did really enjoy working there. But as time went by, I realized that my heart wasn’t into it, I didn’t feel like I belonged there. I am creative by nature and I started to feel restless. I realized that I should be doing what I really love. There is nothing like making your passion your profession, ‘coz then you’ll never have those Monday morning Blues. You have to take that chance to experience something as good as this.
Modeling or photography?
Photography, without a doubt. That is where my heart is. It is an abiding, burning passion.
What is a normal day in your life like?
On the days I’m shooting, my day starts at 5am. I give wake up calls to my crew and scramble to get everybody and all my equipment on time at the set. Shooting days are fun- I LOVE the energy, the madness and the whole creative process that it is. Once we wrap up for the day, I hit the gym. On the days I’m not shooting, I go to the gym early or I’ll be on my computer exploring something new. Or spending time with my cat. It is a great, serene way to unwind and to gather my thoughts.
Other interests or passions?
I’m a fitness enthusiast. I love to learn new workout techniques, the art of body building and everything that relates to fitness. Most people have no idea how good their body is designed to feel. It is so much powerful than we think it is.
I am an animal lover. I have a cat- they happen to be my favorite animals- but I love them all.
What are you listening to right now?
What are you excited about at the moment?
I’m in my 9th week of Kris Gethin’s 12 week training program. I’m excited that I’m very close to the end and also amazed by the results.
What book are you reading at the moment?
The new Encyclopedia of Modern Bodybuilding by Arnold Schwarzenegger
Have the movies come calling yet?
Yes. But I have to say that I am not interested.
What would you advise youngsters following the traditional academic route but nurturing dreams of less conventional career paths?
When we begin to follow our hearts and do what brings us joy, we recognize ourselves and the strength within us. So whichever job you choose to take, at the end of the day, you need to have your ‘job satisfaction’. If that is there, then you are in the right place. If it isn’t, there really is no point to it.
What can you absolutely not do without?
Coffee. I’m a caffeine junkie
What is your daily beauty routine like?
I always use a moisturizer with a sunblock before stepping out. At night I religiously remove whatever little make up I have on and smear my face with petrolatum.
Any unaccomplished dreams/goals?
When you feel you may be really close, why talk about it and jinx it? I’ll wait to announce it when I’ve accomplished it.
If you could effect one change in the world, what would it be?
I’m sure every person in this world would like to bring about some kind of change, be it promoting education, eradicating poverty, empowering women and children or even putting an end to rape. While it is all very well to talk and react indignantly, how many of us actually do something about it? Mere talk achieves nothing. That change you wish to make, begins in your own home. And if all of us did just that, the world would become a better place.
Any message you want to get across to the American Malayali crowd?
Follow the call of your heart. Do whatever it tells you to do. Too much of a good thing can be wonderful!
